Laser Hair Removal Treatments

Laser hair removal treatment has been commercially available since the mid-nineties and is carried out by exposing the skin to pulses of laser light to destroy hair follicles, resulting in the long-term reduction of hair regrowth.
Laser hair removal machines work by selectively heating melanin within the hair follicle and hair shaft, a process known as selective photo thermolysis.
This process heats up and disables the germ cells/blood flow which normally stimulates and feeds the growth of hair follicles.
This process can be successfully carried out by several lasers, most commonly, Ruby Alexandrite, Diode, and Nd:Yag.

Skin also contains melanin, this can absorb some of the light and where this is of a high level of concentration, it is possible to cause blistering, hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation. The longer the wavelength of the lasers, the lower the absorption, hence the lower risk. The longest wavelength laser currently available for this application is Long Pulsed Nd:Yag delivering light at 1064nm.
